DEGREE DESCRIPTION:

The Master of Social Work program offered through the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Maasai Mara University, provides students with knowledge and skills in advanced social work practice within a focus on social, economic, health, research/scholarship, professional leadership, and social work supervision. This programme is delivered primarily on campus both on full time and part time basis, allowing students to continue to participate in family and community life while pursuing a post-graduate degree in social work. The MSW programme offers a rich and highly interactive learning environment. Because, Social work is grounded upon the concepts of social justice, empowerment, and equal access to all societal members, the MSW programme will equip the postgraduate students with a strong desire to assist in improving people's lives. The graduates will help people function the best way they can in their environment, deal with their relationships, and solve personal and family problems. Individual problems may include but are not limited to inadequate housing, unemployment, serious physical and mental illness, disability and/or substance abuse. They will also assist families that have serious domestic conflicts, including those involving child or spousal abuse.

 

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE PROGRAMME:

At the end of this programme, students will develop the necessary skills to:

  • Enhance the functioning of individuals, families, groups, and organizations.
  • Empower individuals and families to strengthen their communities.
  • Assume leadership in the human services delivery system and influence public policies to advance social justice.
  • Enable learners to develop and implement sound social research that contributes to Social Work theory, knowledge and research based practice for sustainable social development.
  • Design, mobilize resources and manage environmentally sensitive development programmes.

 

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROGRAMME

Applicants who possess the following in the relevant academic bachelor’s degree are eligible:-

  1. Bachelors Degree, Second Class (Upper Division) or a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 in a relevant field of study from a recognized university.
  2. Bachelors Degree, Second Class (Lower Division) or a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.50 on a scale of 4.00 with additional relevant training, evidence of research capability, either through research, paper presentations or peer reviewed publications and relevant 2 years working experience.
  3. Bachelors Degree with a pass and Postgraduate Diploma in a relevant field of study.
  4. Foreign students must have proficiency in English to qualify.
