Goals of the Programme

The Microbiology programme is aimed at:

  1. Producing graduates who are well grounded in the fundamentals of microbiologyand acquisition of the necessary skills in order to use their knowledge in microbiology in a wide range of practical applications.
  2. Developing creative thinking and the power of imagination to enable graduates work in research in academia and industry for broader application.
  • Preparing graduates to the employment opportunities in both public and private sector within the country and internationally.
  1. Developing graduates with the necessary skills for industrial and scientific research.

 Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme           

  1. Knowledge

The Microbiology programme enables students develop competencies required to: 

  1. Solve problems in Microbiologyand offer relevant solutions using appropriate tools.
  2. Explore microbial phenomena and model their behaviour through analytical techniques.
  • Apply principles of operation of molecular biology devices and instruments.
  1. Demonstrate the environmental and social impacts of microorganisms and their activities
  2. Develop business and management techniques relevant to a Microbiology field.

 

  1. Cognitive skills/Application of knowledge

At the end of the programme the learner should be able to:

  1. Execute and critically analyze results of an investigation and make logical conclusions.
  2. Use scientific principles in solving of microbiological problems.

iii)      Explain various scientific phenomena

  1. Analyze experimental data in Microbiology.
  2. Use computers in the treatment of experimental results.
  3. Prepare research proposals and write reports.

Mode of Delivery of the Programme

The programme will be delivered mainly through face to face contact with students. In situations of a distance approach of course delivery, students would be required to have access to laboratory facilities for a hands-on laboratory practice and field work.

The general teaching methodology will be lectures, tutorials, seminars, brain storming, academic field trips, group discussion and class presentations
