University of Limerick signs new agreement with Maasai Mara University, Kenya

Limerick1Prof. Pat Phelan signed an MOU with Vice Chancellor Mary Walingo in the presence of Kenyan Ambassador to Ireland Mr. Richard Obembe. This is seen as an important first step in building a partnership with Maasai Mara University in the areas of Nursing, Environmental Science and Business. MMU are one of the brightest and best new Universities in Kenya and will be a key partner in the region for UL. 

VC Walingo and Ambassador Opembe received a tour of the Bernal Institute from Dr. Sarah Brady and a UL campus tour with Liam Ryan from IED.

German Engineers at Integrated Renewable Energy Technology Research Centre

10feb175The German Engineers without Borders at Maasai Mara University to do a presentation on the proposed project Collaboration: Integrated Renewable Energy Technology Research Centre: An Educational and Knowledge Transfer Green Climate Hub at Maasai Mara University, Kenya.

They met with the Vice Chancellor and were hosted by the Center for Innovation New and Renewable Energy and Project Team of experts led by the Centre Director, Dr. Aloys Mosima Osano, the Lead proposed Project Leader from Maasai Mara University.

The Engineers were representing the German collaborative partners in this project: Otto Von Guericke University, Martin Luther University, Germany Biomass Research Center and Germany Biogas Association.

Workshop at Maasai Mara University on mobilization and awareness creation of scientists

workshopA team led by Dr. Eric Mwangi from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Kenya conducted a one-day workshop at Maasai Mara University on mobilization and awareness creation of scientists on the upcoming EU’s funding schemes on Horizon 2020 and the African-European ERA-NET Co-Fund (LEAP-Agri) calls for proposals. LEAP-Agri is an African Union-European Union partnership between 30 partners aimed at research and innovation for food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture. The partnership is an ERA-NET co-fund financed by institutes and ministries from these countries with additional finances from the European Commission in support of the EU-Africa high level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation and the implementation of the jointly funded EU-Africa Research and Innovation Partnership. The focus of the workshop was on mobilization of the University staff to develop competitive proposals specifically on food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture.

Thereafter, the team visited the African Medicinal Botanical Garden to see the innovative developments being made by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mary K. Walingo. Also present was the Director of The Institute for Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicines, Prof. Dr. Wycliffe Wanzala.
