Preamble

The market driven programme is designed to prepare globally competitive, efficient and effective secondary school teachers, leaders and managers capable of creatively and innovatively responding to the changing environment. The programme will also prepare the student teachers to respond to the demands of the teaching profession and inspire them to embrace research and development, community service and lifelong learning.

Goal

The programme is designed to produce innovative, professional secondary school teachers capable of driving the education sector towards achievement of the national goals.

Expected learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes are to:

    1. Enhance the teachers’ theoretical and Practical knowledge on subject content, pedagogical knowledge and professional skills.
    2. Develop a teacher who is creative, innovative and capable of harnessing Information Communication Technologies in teaching and learning.
    3. Inculcate passion and love for the teaching profession.
    4. Develop teachers’ awareness, understanding and commitment to professional ethics and conduct, legal foundation of education, sound health practices, and emerging and contemporary issues.
    5. Promote, create and nurture competence, integrity, honesty and moral uprightness in teacher education.
    6. Foster teamwork, creativity, effective communication, tolerance, perseverance and culture of peace through education.
    7. Promote excellence, openness, and broad consultation and consensus building, efficiency and effectiveness.
    8. Initiate and promote scholarship, academic freedom and research.
    9. Improve teachers’ leadership and managerial skills.
    10. Promote continuing education.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The following are eligible for consideration for admission; a holder of KCSE mean grade of C+ or Diploma in Education from a recognized institution with a mean grade of C+ in KCSE.

Design of the Programme

Students are required to take all the common courses offered by the University. The students shall take all professional Courses offered by the School of Education. Students are required to take an approved combination of two secondary school teaching subjects. In choosing the combinations, students must have done the subjects at KCSE or A Level and attained at least C+ or equivalent in the two teaching subjects.

In this program, a student pursues education and university common units, with any approved two teaching subjects in secondary school to add on to guidance and counseling courses. The approved secondary school teaching subjects’ combinations from science based subjects are as follows:

All students (B.Ed Science) shall be required to undertake Teaching Practice (TP) at the end of third year and an Educational Research Project.

Mode of Delivery

The mode of delivery of will be face to face, distance learning and e-learning.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Obligations of the students:

  1. Students’ class attendance: All students shall be required to attend all the standard hours for a credit unit. For a three-unit course, the standards hours are 45 inclusive of examinations. For a two-unit course, the standards hours are 30 inclusive of examinations. It is mandatory for a student to attend 80% of unit hours.
  2. Teaching practice: All students shall undertake teaching practice worth 6 credit hours.
  3. During teaching students shall undertake an EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT that is beneficial to the teaching profession.

Obligations of the lecturers:

The lecturers shall be guided by the ISO procedures, Commission of University (CUE), Relevant Legal documents on education and University Quality Management system documents.

Obligations of the University:

The University shall provide all the resource required to actualize this curriculum.

STUDENTS’ ASSESSMENT: POLICY AND CRITERIA

  • Assessment shall be in form of Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) and examinations. The assessment could be in form of theory, projects and Practical. The CATS shall constitute 30% while examination shall be 70% of final grade.
  • Assessment in teaching practice shall constitute 80% from University assessment and 20% from the assessment of principal of host school or the cooperating teacher (regular subject teacher).
  • EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT shall be 3 Credit hours accounting for 100%.

GRADING SYSTEM

  • 0-39: F (Fail)
  • 40-49: D (Pass)
  • 50-59: C (Good)
  • 60-69: B (Very Good)
  • 70 and above: A (excellent)

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The student shall undertake University Core Courses, Professional Courses and Subject area course.

They shall take at least seven (7) courses per semester. Total units in four (4) years shall be at least 56 to qualify for graduation.
