The program leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Microbiology degree shall normally be four (4) academic years of eight semesters, unless Senate on the recommendation of the school Board approves exemption. A semester shall normally take a period of 16 weeks.

1.9.5    Class attendance/Attachment

Students must satisfy class attendance requirements spelt out in the University examination regulations besides attending a 2-month mandatory attachment at the end of the third year of study.Attendance shall be maintained through registers for both theory and practical courses.

1.9.6    STUDENT ASSESSMENT POLICY/CRITERIA

The General University Examination Regulations and the special examination regulations set by the Maasai Mara University shall apply. End of semester exams are written within 2-hour period. The weighting for each course is as follows:

(a)  Theory Courses

Continuous assessment tests (CATs)                                                    20%

End of semester exam; A written paper of 2 hours duration                   70%

(b)  Theory and Laboratory based Courses

(c) Regulations for project work

A student registered in accordance with the regulations will be required to pursue a project under the guidance of the supervisor appointed by the departmental board.

Final year project assessment will bebased on performance in oral presentations and a formal written report.Oral presentation will be done before a departmental board. The departmental examiners’ board will be allowed to ask questions and may contribute to the assessment of the candidate. The duration of the oral presentation shall be limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. After the oral presentation the departmental examiners’ board shall compile the scores and determine the average score which shall be entered as the final mark in the project. The scoring shall be split as shown below:

1.9.7    Grading system

The grading system of courses and degree classification shall be the same as those contained in the common rules and regulations for undergraduate examinations of 2010 of Maasai Mara University found in section 5.3.

1.9.8    Examination regulations

Examinations will be governed by the common rules and regulations for undergraduate examination regulations of 2010 of Maasai Mara University.

1.9.8.1MODERATIONof Examinations

The external examiner shall be involved in the moderation of examination question papers and marked scripts. Internal examiners will also be required to moderate examinations before being taken to the external examiner.

1.9.8.2Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of a B.Sc. degree in Botany, a student shall satisfy all the university requirements pertaining to the degree. 

1.9.8.3Classification of BSc. Botany degree

Classification will be as stated in the Maasai Mara University common rules and regulations for undergraduate examinations.

2.0       Course evaluation

Review of this curriculum will be done after 5 years. Course evaluation shall include the course content, instructional process, infrastructure and equipment for the delivery, instructional and reference materials and assessments.

2.1          MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION            

The BSc inBotanyhoused in the Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Science and information Sciences. Leadership is offered by the Dean of the School.

The Departmental Curriculum Board is the major vehicle for the quality assurance for the programme. It works hand in hand with the Directorate of Quality Assurance and Performance Contracting (DQAPC). DQAPC in turn reports to Senate through the academic division head. The directorate focuseson quality assurance, enhancement and internal audit of quality and arrangements necessary to ensure compliance with national, regional and international frameworks and codes of practice relating to academic standards, quality assurance and enhancement of degree programmes in the university.
