1.0 BACKGROUND
1.1 UNIVERSITY VISION, MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY
1.1.1 Vision
The Vision of Maasai Mara University (MMARAU) is “to be a world class university committed to academic excellence for development”.
1.1.2 Mission
The Mission of Maasai Mara University is “to provide quality University education through innovative teaching, research and consultancy services for development”.
1.1.3 Philosophy
The Philosophy of MMARAU is “to promote holistic education for both students and staff through teaching, research, innovation and extension, in order to promote social, economic and political development of Kenya and beyond and to realize sustainable conservation of the environment through natural resource management and tourism”.
1.2 UNIVERSITY MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
As stipulated by Maasai Mara University Senate, the minimum entry requirement for an undergraduate degree is KCSE C+. In addition, the regular government sponsored students are admitted upon meeting the requirements stipulated by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
- a) C+ for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) holders or its equivalent
as determined by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC);
- b) KNEC diploma or its equivalent.
2.0 THE PROGRAMME
2.1.1 TITLE
The title of the programme is Bachelor of Science in Human Resource management
2.1.2 PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of the Bachelor of Science in Human Resource management is to inculcate in the students with Human Resource Management culture that will provide academic and professional foundation in management by disseminating knowledge and skills to meet evolving career requirements of managers in the private and public sectors and manage business ventures successfully.
2.1.3 RATIONALE
This programme has been developed to satisfy needs in both the private and public sector. The programme is to develop trainees to acquire skills in: business administration, entrepreneurship, project, and programme management. Business managerial skills will be emphasized so as to make graduates of the course develop a wider understanding of successful business management.
1) The justification of the need for the programme shall be realistic;
2) The rationale of the programme shall be informed by a:
- a) Needs assessment, market survey or situation analysis; and
- b) Stakeholders’ requirements.
2.4 GOAL
The goal of the programme is to orient and/or re-orient students’ thinking into creating jobs for themselves and others as opposed to focusing on getting employed in the formal sector.
2.5 EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES / PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
By the end of the programme, the student should be able to:

- Promote co-operation and awareness between academia and the general business community.
- Promote basic and applied research and the development of training tools in business management.
- Address the dynamics and challenges of rapidly changing globalized market.
2.6 MODE OF DELIVERY
The programme shall be delivered using following the modes:
- Face-to-face (full-time, part-time, evening, weekend);
- Open and distance;
- E-learning;
The mode of delivery may, however, vary from time to time and from Campus to Campus based on the specific needs of the students and available resources.
2.7 ACADEMIC REGULATIONS
2.7.1 Admission Requirements
The Maasai Mara University common regulations for admission into undergraduate programmes shall apply. However, a student should have obtained grade C+ at KCSE.

- At least a mean grade of C+ (plus) and a C (plain) in English Language and KiswahiliOR,
- At least two Principal and one Subsidiary passes in Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE); OR,
- A Diploma in Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship, Business Management, Economics, or any other business area of study from Maasai Mara University or any institution recognized by Maasai Mara University Senate with at least a credit to be admitted in the second year of study; OR,
2.7.2 Credit Transfer
Transfer of Credits shall be accepted for purposes of student mobility and recognition of previous learning.
- In line with the existing qualification frameworks, credit transfers shall only be accepted from accredited institutions and programmes;
- Credit transfers may be permitted up to a maximum of 49% of the core course units for similar programmes at the same level;
- No credit transfer shall be allowed in respect of University-wide common courses.
2.7.3 Student Assessment Policy/Criteria
The Maasai Mara University Common Undergraduate Examination Regulations shall apply.
The pass mark shall be 40%. There shall be a written end-of-semester examination for each course taken during the semester, and it will constitute 70% of the total marks for that course. There shall be Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) worth 30% of the total marks for each course. CATs will normally be in the form of assignments, sit-in tests, seminars, term papers, or essays.
2.7.4 Grading and Classification System
The letter grades for respective performance in individual courses shall be as follows:

The overall classification of the degree shall be based on the overall weighted average performance as follows:

Academic credits acquired elsewhere and transferred into a student’s programme shall not be considered in the calculation of the final classification his/her degree.
2.7.5 Examination Regulations
Examinations will be governed by the common rules and regulations for undergraduate examination regulations of Maasai Mara University.
2.7.6 General structure of the BSC- HRM programme
The degree programme covers university-wide courses, division common courses, the areas of specialization courses and electives. To qualify for graduation a student will be required to pass a minimum of 56 courses. A student is required to register for at least 14 units in each academic year including all courses designated as University-wide courses, the degree common courses, areas of specialization and elective courses.

All the courses carry 3 CREDIT HOURS (hours) per week hence a total of 168 CREDIT HOURS required for graduation.
2.7.7 Duration of the Course
The duration of the course shall normally be four academic years of two semesters each.
2.8 COURSE EVALUATION
The programme shall be evaluated as per the Maasai Mara University Quality Management System (QMS) Policy and Procedure on course evaluation. The evaluation shall cover all the aspects of each courseincluding course content, instructional process, infrastructure and equipment for the delivery of the course, instructional and reference materials,and assessments.The feedback on course evaluation shall be utilized in decision-making with regard to all the coursesin the programme.
2.9 MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
The management and administration of Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management shall be undertaken in such a way that it will ensure adequateacademic leadership and internal quality assurance mechanisms. The programme will be taught by a mix of professors, senior lecturers, lecturers and assistant lecturers. The senior academic staff shall provide the necessary academic leadershipat both the department and school levels.
For effective and efficient teaching and learning, the Maasai Mara University ISO policies and procedures contained in various Quality Manuals of the Quality Management System (QMS) shall be followed strictly. There shall be proper documentation of any deviations or non-conformities and corrective action shall be taken promptly.
3.0 INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT
All the BSC (HRM) students shall be required to undergo an industrial attachment at the end of the third year of study and then write and submit a report for examination in the first semester of the 4th year of study. The purpose of the industrial attachment is to allow the students to understand the industry practices.
Students will be attached for three months to different organizations. They will be required to fully participate in the routine tasks and assignment of the organisation. The purpose is to enhance their understanding in the general areas of management such as; principles, organisational structure and design, organisational policies and work ethics, team building, communication and organisational performance. At the end, the students are required to write a report on their experiences during the attachment linking the theory and practice. The report will be examined.
