Leaders in Narok County have called on education stakeholders and professionals to help root out early pregnancies and Female Genital Mutilation FGM in order to revamp the academic standards in the area. The appeal was made by both the Narok County Governor Hon. Samuel Kuntai Ole Tunai and the Narok County Commissioner George Natembeya during the 55th Jamhuri Day Celebrations held at the Narok Stadium.

Speaking during the occasion, Governor Ole Tunai encouraged academic institutions, Maasai Mara University inclusive, to work in unison with the County Government and the National Government towards improving the academic standards of Narok County. Hon. Samuel Ole Tunai has also been recognized by President Uhuru Kenyatta receiving the Elder of Golden Heart feat.

He added that the County Government has been instrumental in supporting the needy students that hail from humble background through bursaries and scholarships. This is one treasure that some alumni and students of Maasai Mara University originating from Narok County and beyond are beneficiaries.

His sentiments were echoed by the Narok County Commissioner George Natembeya who came out strongly condemning parents and guardians who subject their very young girls to the outlawed Female Genital Mutilation FGM, at the expense of their education.

Natembeya also decried the highest levels of early and teenage pregnancies citing recent statistics that Narok County is leading in the tragedy with 40%. He also warned that he has devised a technique of identifying pupils and students who might undergo the cut secretly during this festive holiday. The parents or guardians found culpable will face the full force of the law. Natembeya has also won gratitude from President Uhuru Kenyatta following exemplary service hence the title the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear.

Maasai Mara University have had good rapport with the office of the Governor and the County Commissioner, working together towards sustainable academic progress in the County. It is at Maasai Mara University where Narok County held academic conferences and meetings geared towards notable advancements of education standards. Besides, MMARAU also has been hosting the National Celebrations like Jamhuri Day, Madaraka Day, Mashujaa day etc. even before the inception of devolution when Narok County Stadium was still under construction.
