Economics is a broad field that aims to understand why the world works as it does and how government and other interventions might affect well being. The field is diverse methodologically, encompassing mathematical modeling, economic modelling and Statistics in the attempt to understand government and individual behavior with statistics and econometrics in developing data analysis techniques. Economics studies decision-making at the individual level and the aggregate outcomes that result when individuals, firms, institutions and governments interact. It is concerned with  topics, such as the causes of business cycles, the effects of industry regulations, and the consequences of tax policies, but also focuses on the diverse social challenges of the developed and developing world: poverty, education, health, the environment, and inequality. The Department of Economics offers subjects at multiple levels in the three core areas of the discipline—microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. The department also offers specialized subjects in many applied fields, including development economics, environmental economics, health economics, industrial organization, international trade, labor economics and public finance. The department offers five undergraduate programs and four postgraduate programs that prepare students for careers in business, finance, consulting, law and public policy, and for further study.

Academic programmes

Undergraduate Entry Requirements Admission into the undergraduate programs requires the potential candidate to have attained the minimum university entry requirement of KCSE C+ and the minimum requirements for a specific program shall apply.

Duration
The undergraduate degree program will extend over a period of four (4) academic years comprising of eight (8) semesters.

Graduate Study
Admission Requirements The following shall be eligible for admission into the Masters programs in the department of Economics:
A holder of at least an Upper Second-Class Bachelors Degree in Economics, Economics and Statistics, Financial Economics, Agribusiness Management or Agricultural Economics and Resource Management from Maasai Mara University or any other recognized Institution.

A holder of a Lower Second-Class degree in the stated disciplines from Maasai Mara University or any other recognized university with 2 years relevant experience.
