INTRODUCTION

The Master of Environmental Planning and Management prepares students with a bachelor’s degree in Land Resource Planning and management, Agriculture, Architecture, Environmental Studies, Law, Engineering, Geography, Forestry, Sociology or related disciplines to pursue advanced studies in Environmental Resources Planning and Management. Masters of Environmental Planning and Management is an interdisciplinary graduate program for students who wish to broaden their knowledge of physical, social and natural environment or who seek special education in technical, social, or management aspects of environment. The broad construal of environmental resources in this program is based on the idea that environment includes all physical elements in the wealth of a nation bestowed by nature and is critical to the economic, social and cultural development of a nation.

The program provides opportunities for interdisciplinary graduate study and research and its goal is to give students a broad understanding of environmental resources as well as knowledge of related scientific, technical, socio-political, legal, and economic aspects. 

RATIONALE

The Master of Environmental Planning and Management provide an excellent, practically-based planning education that has several distinctive features:

Firstly, it is unique in that it offers a multi-disciplinary research-led programme in Environmental Planning and Management consistent with the changing needs of contemporary planning theory and practice.  The proposed degree emphasizes the integrated nature of planning through the delivery of course units from social, economic, political and environmental sciences to understand and evaluate planning processes, policies and tools set within Kenya, and increasingly regional and global systems. The multi-disciplinary nature of the degree provides students with the opportunities to develop strength in areas of choice.  

Secondly, the Master of Environmental Planning and Management enables students to develop critical thinking skills, the ability to conduct independent research, and the skills to work with others in an integrated manner on challenging projects. Students develop interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills essential for working in teams and interacting with people from diverse cultures, communities, and backgrounds. 


Thirdly, the Master of Environmental Planning and Management emphasises the importance of practical experience and builds real-world problem-solving skills through field and studio work, workshops, role-plays, case studies, and close interaction with lecturers and leading practitioners. Students also develop an ethical and theoretical foundation that serves them well for professional practice.  


Finally, while rooted in the Kenyan context, the Master of Environmental Planning and Management draws on international experience and planning approaches. Maasai Mara University Master of Environmental Planning and Management graduates can therefore apply their training locally or overseas in a variety of professional and applied environments. 

OBJECTIVES

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

 To train and impart knowledge to planners who will facilitate and guide society in policy analysis, plan formulation, plan preparation and implementation at different levels and for different sectors.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Graduates of this programme will have mastered and/or acquired the following:

  • The history and socio-political background of urban and regional planning in Kenya and beyond;
  • The changing nature of planning including spatial, rural, regional and urban components;
  • Graduates will also have critical thinking skills, oral and communication skills, self-directed learning skills and familiarity with particular techniques and tools relevant to Urban and Regional Planning;
  • An ability to assemble, evaluate, analyse, assess, and synthesise information from a wide range of disciplines;
  • The ability to make sound judgments in relation to planning objectives, policies and methods in accord with legal requirements and principles of good planning.

ADMISSIONS

The common regulations for the Masters degrees in the School of Tourism and Natural Resource Management shall apply. 

The candidates for the Master of Environmental Planning and Management should have:-

At least a second class honours (upper division) degree in Environmental Bachelor of Environmental Planning and Management, Bachelor of Environmental Studies, Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning OR Bachelor of Science/Arts in Geography, Economics, Surveying and Photogrammetry, Land Economics, Building Economics, Estate Management, Housing Technology, Engineering, Sociology, Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife, Zoology, Botany OR Bachelor of Architecture OR Bachelor of Lawfrom a University recognised by the Maasai Mara University Senate, or

A holder of a second class honours (lower division) degree in above recognized degrees provided that the candidate has acquired at least two years relevant experience.

PROGRAMME DURATION AND PATTERN

The Master of Environmental Planning and Management is a two year, full time course. In the first three semesters students shall take a minimum of 18 units of which 12 will be core and the remaining 6 electives. In the fourth semester, students will have to prepare a research project Equivalent to 6 Units. Successful completion of the Programme leads to the award of a Master of Environmental Planning and Management.
