SUMMER SCHOOL TRAINEES AWARDED CERTIFICATES
THEATRE FOR DEVELOPMENT: SUMMER SCHOOL TRAINEES AWARDED CERTIFICATES
THEATRE FOR DEVELOPMENT
Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Stella Kirui awarded certificates to summer school trainees. She was accompanied by Dean School of Arts, Humanities, Social Science and Creative Industries, Prof. Benard Kodak and the Coordinator, Maasai Mara Summer Institute of Screen and Performing Arts, Prof. Solomon Waliaula.
One of the initiatives at School of Arts, Humanities, Social Science and Creative Industries is the establishment of an annual Summer School for Screen and Performance Arts, which are covered in one of the Literature, Theatre and Film Programme offered at the Department of Languages, Linguistics and Culture and also, in different ways, covered in or applicable to other programmes in the school such as Media, Film and Communication, Community Development and Social Work.
The main objective of the summer school is to develop in the learner practical skills in theatre and film production and it is accordingly built around teamwork and tasks in a process where students are mentored by leading practitioners.
A pilot version of the Summer School, which was run as a theatre workshop was run for a week between 28.1.2025 and 4.2.2025. It involved third-year and a few second-year students of Literature, Theatre and Film. The resource person and facilitator were Mr. Michael Messemer, a German based theatre practitioner with international experience in theatre for development (TFD). In the end, the students performed two short plays that followed the TFD method of involving the audience in questioning and remaking the plays in performance.
We give credit to the Dean, SAHSCI, for having the overall production, to Dr. Maureen Amimo and Dr. Joseph Basil Okong’o for coordinating the workshop, and to all the students in the Literature, Theatre and Film Programme for their involvement at the end.
