Department of Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences at Maasai Mara University is committed to advancing knowledge in the fields of Botany, Microbiology, and Zoology, fostering academic excellence, and contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in Kenya and beyond. With a strong emphasis on both theoretical and practical learning, the department prepares students for careers in academia, research, conservation, environmental management, and various industries related to biological sciences.
The Department of Biological Sciences has a dynamic research agenda that aligns with the institution’s vision to address environmental challenges, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development. Faculty members and students actively engage in research focusing on:
- Botany: Plant ecology, ethnobotany, conservation of plant biodiversity, agricultural biotechnology, and plant physiology.
- Microbiology: Microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, industrial microbiology, pathogens, and bioremediation.
- Zoology: Animal behavior, ecology, pest and vector dynamics, parasitology, entomology, and biodiversity management, particularly in the context of Kenya’s rich natural heritage.
The department encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging in both local and global research projects to contribute to the body of scientific knowledge while addressing real-world challenges.
