Bachelor of Science (Zoology)

Course Structure

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The emerging trends in new diseases and the challenges brought about by neglected tropical diseases and the increasing rate of lifestyle diseases in Kenya and the world at large demands for scientists who will help contain or solve these issues and there is no better place to develop such personnel other than in the Zoology programme.Undergraduate students will develop a strong foundation in the Zoology programme. This includes laboratory science, basic methods of scientific research, anatomy, ecology, principles of genetics, and evolution. In addition to biology courses, students typically undertake chemistry, physics, biochemistry, and mathematics courses relevant to an all-round zoology graduate.

LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT MODES

The general teaching methodology are lectures, tutorials, seminars, brain storming, field trips, group discussion, and class presentations, hands-on laboratory practice and field work.

LEARNING FACILITIES THAT SUPPORT THE PROGRAMME

The Biology laboratory presents opportunity for educational research practical and experiments to connect   theory being taught in classroom setup to hands on praxis. This is achieved by laboratory test trials and experimental proof of concepts. The laboratories are envisaged with conducive teaching and learning space, adequate science laboratory materials and chemicals to enhance teaching and learning intercourse.

Many zoologist careers involve hands-on work, traveling and monitoring animals in their natural habitats to understand the environment and how everything affects lifestyle. Government employment focuses on national parks and wildlife refuges, preserves, national and international studies and research institutes. Research institutesemploy zoologists to study and test new products and operations that affect nature and animal life.
