Africa Uncensored Journalism Student Mentoship
The University through the Department of Media, Film, and Communication (MFC), in collaboration with Africa Uncensored hosted a wo day Journalism Students training. The event took place on March 19 to March 20, 2025.
The event targeted students pursuing Communication and Journalism, Public Relations and Communication, and Kiswahili and Journalism, with the aim of equipping them with practical skills and deeper knowledge of their respective fields.
the Vice Chancellor, Professor Peninah Aloo Obudho officially opened the event accompanied by other University management: The Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics and Student Affairs, Prof. Bulitia Mathews, the Dean School of Arts and Creative Industries Prof. Bernard Kodak and the Chair of the Department, Dr. Ikachoi among others.
In her address, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the critical role journalism plays in society, describing it as a powerful tool that must be used responsibly, as misuse can cause harm within the community. She also highlighted the University’s five key pillars the 5Ms: Mau Forest, Mara River, Maa Culture, Maasai Mara Game Reserve, and Maombi kwa Wote (prayers for all) encouraging students to embody these values in their academic and professional journeys. “Today’s event is more than just a gathering it is meeting early career investigative journalists, training on key learning areas of investigative journalism, mentoring and coaching to facilitate knowledge sharing, expand networks and help create a strong culture where there is a support network for growth,” the V.C said.
The V.C expressed gratitude to the Africa Uncensored team for taking their time to mentor and train young journalists. She urged students to actively engage with the facilitators and take advantage of the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and industry insights. “We gather not just to celebrate an event, but to receive informative content that increases knowledge and understanding,” she said.
The event was officially closed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor ASA, Prof. Bulitia who extended his heartfelt appreciation to all who contributed to the success of the event. He commended Africa Uncensored for their commitment and effort in nurturing the next generation of journalists. Prof. Bulitia emphasized Maasai Mara University’s commitment to balancing theory and practice at a 50-50 ratio, preparing students to excel both academically and professionally. He encouraged students with the words: "You are not the journalists of tomorrow, but of today."
Dr. Ikachoi, the Chair of the Department, also thanked Africa Uncensored for their collaboration and pledged to continue organizing such events to ensure Maasai Mara University students are well equipped for the media industry.
