In a significant stride towards fostering diversity and inclusivity in the field of optics, Optica, the leading international association dedicated to promoting research and education in the science of light, has awarded its prestigious scholarship to a standout Master’s student from Maasai Mara University in Kenya.

Each year, Optica extends a helping hand to ten Black undergraduate and master’s students by offering a substantial US$7,500 scholarship. The initiative aims to alleviate the financial burdens that often accompany pursuing higher education. Beyond the financial support, the scholarship recipients gain access to a myriad of benefits designed to enrich their academic and professional journeys.

This year, Brian Osoro, a dedicated Master’s student hailing from Maasai Mara University, emerged as one of the distinguished recipients of the Optica scholarship. Brian’s achievement not only highlights his academic prowess but also emphasizes the global reach and impact to UN Sustainable Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation to promoting diversity in the field.

His research focuses on applying spectroscopy to detect microplastics in bottled drinking water, contributing to UN Sustainable Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.
