Maasai Mara Unvelvety Students Association (MMUSA) 6th Election

Maasai Mara Unvelvety Students Association (MMUSA) successfully held its 6th election on 13th February. The elected officials were sworn in on 17th February 2024 by the Chief Legal Officer Ms. Mercylene Njoroge.
The peaceful election saw two parties battle it out: Voice of Comrades Alliance (VOCA) and Comrades Defense Forces (CDF) with the former emerging victorious.
The process was smooth under the leadership of the Returning Officer Dr. John Kungu and his Deputy Dr. Anne Kenton.
The process began when University students elected their departmental delegates, with each department selecting three representatives. After the Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC) announced the results, the two competing coalitions—Voice of Comrades Alliance (VOCA) and Comrades Defense Forces (CDF) squared it during the Student Governing Council (SGC) election.
ISEC Chairperson Odhiambo Collins Omondi announced VOCA’s flag bearer, Victor Mwema as the newly elected president after garnering 29 votes, while CDF received 19 votes. Other elected officials are: Sandra Jerutu, Vice-President, Aaron Simiyu, Secretary General, Frankline Moseti, Academic and Editorial, Jackson Lomerikwang, Treasury, Able Simei, Entertainment and Culture and Hope Shiro, Health.
The swearing in ceremony was graced by the Vie-Chancellor Prof. Peninah Aloo-Obudho, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and Students Affairs Prof. Stella Kirui, Dean of Students Mr. Mohamed Adan, Deputy Dean of Students Dr. Elizabeth Sambu and a cross- section of staff.
The Vice-Chancellor promised to ensure that students needs are catered for based on the availability of funds. She announced that student Centre booths are in procurement process. Additionally, the challenges raised by student leaders: Security , street lights, tarmacking of gate C road and a raft of academic issues would be taken seriously through participatory engagement.
The Dean reminded the elected leaders that activism time is over and it is now time to face reality. Returning officer Dr. Kungu urged the elected leaders to lead from the front and by example.
This election highlights MMARAU’s commitment to democratic principles and sets a positive precedent for the newly elected 6th MMUSA Council to advocate for and effectively represent student interests.
