Planned Grass Taxonomy Workshop with Krishna Mahavidyalaya, Rethare Bk University College, India (Late March/Early April, 2025)
The Maasai Mara grassland ecosystem is a globally significant biodiversity hotspot known for its vast grasslands, diverse wildlife, and seasonal herbivore migration. However, human activities, climate change, and habitat degradation threaten its ecological balance. This project aims to survey the Maasai Mara grasslands to assess their current state, identify threats, and propose sustainable conservation strategies. The main objectives are:
- Evaluating grass diversity in relation to grassland health, grazing, and land use.
- Involving local communities in sustainable management practices.
- Recommending effective conservation and restoration policies.
An interdisciplinary approach will be used, combining ecological surveys with community engagement through interviews and workshops with Maasai pastoralists. Data analysis will assess grassland health indicators to guide policy decisions.
Expected outcomes include:
- Baseline data on grass species diversity and ecosystem health.
- Policy recommendations for sustainable grazing and conservation.
- Capacity-building for students, researchers, and local communities.
This collaborative project involves academic and research institutions, government agencies, and NGOs, with local Maasai communities playing a key role in sustainable grassland management. Funding will be sought from international conservation bodies, governmental grants, and ecotourism partnerships. The goal is to support biodiversity, livelihoods, and ecological balance, ensuring the sustainability of the Maasai Mara grasslands.
The workshop will involve at least 25 participants, including students (BSc, MSc, PhD), researchers, conservationists, and local Maasai community members. The schedule will feature morning lectures, afternoon practical sessions, and field visits in the Mara ecosystem, aligning with the flowering period of many grass species for hands-on learning.
Prof. Salunkhe Chandrakant from Krishna Mahavidyalaya, India, along with 2-3 experts, will facilitate the workshop, providing training materials like books and cameras. A joint organizing committee from MMARAU and MRBk will oversee the event, concluding with an MoU to ensure continued collaboration. Funding will come from both institutions, the Indian High Commission, and the National Research Fund, Kenya.
Université Paris Cité & The French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Maasai Mara University Research Collaboration Meeting
In recent years, Maasai Mara University has strengthened its ties with French institutes, leading to a funded project by the Joint Research Programme (JRP) – The French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), hosting the 3rd Groupe Interdisciplinaire Great Rift Africain (GDR) colloquium, and signing a Memorandum of Understanding with L’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). Université Paris Cité, France, is a key partner for future collaborations.
The University hosted Prof. Laurent Royon (Director, Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Energies of Tomorrow – LIED), Prof. Steeve Reisberg (Director, Institut Universitaire de Technologie – IUT de Paris Pajol), and Prof. Benoit Hazard (Regional Director for CNRS in East, Central, and West Africa) for a research collaboration meeting on 20th and 21st December 2024.
The meeting aimed to explore joint research areas between Université Paris Cité (LIED and IUT), CNRS, and Maasai Mara University’s School of Pure and Applied Sciences. Key outcomes included:
- Collaboration on technician training programs with IUT.
- Joint training initiatives and student and staff exchange programs.
- Piloting a biosensors project from LIED at Maasai Mara University.
- Establishing a “desk of science” at CNRS to co-organize an Annual Innovation event with Maasai Mara University.

These partnerships enhance research collaboration and academic exchange, contributing to the University’s international growth.
Community One Health and Climate Coalition (COHCC) Research Workshop
The Community One Health and Climate Coalition (COHCC) research workshop was organized jointly by Maasai Mara University and ACOPPHE. The Workshop targeted institutions, organizations, community social organizations and the community in the space of One Health and Climate. The workshop was held physically in Maasai Mara University on 7th and 8th November, 2024. The workshop brought together over 100 participants from at least 25 different organizations in the space of Community One Health and Climate with most of their expectations being met. The workshop addressed various key elements affecting the space including revenue mobilization, networking and community engagement. Five (5) thematic areas were formulated to work towards development of fundable concept notes that would all address Community One Health and Climate. The workshop bore the following coalition goals;
(a) Short term goal – Community Symposium in Marsabit on 20th Dec, 2024
(b) Medium term goal – International Conference in Maasai Mara University to be co-funded by the University and ACOPPHE in August, 2025
(c) Long term goal – Development of a Research Institute on Community One Health and Climate in Maasai Mara University as from September, 2025
