The Nursing Department organized an impactful event aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse and its effects on youth, especially those in campus settings. Theme of the event was Say No to Drugs. It Ruins Our Lives. The event was graced University management: Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Outreach (RIO) Professor Francis Mburu, Deputy Dean of Students, Dr. Sister Sambu, Dr. Nancy Kimile, the Librarian, Chairperson Health, Ms. Jacqueline Naulikha among others.
One of the most touching moments of the event was a heartfelt testimony from Ivon Mwaura, a student who bravely shared her journey of battling drug addiction. Ivon narrated how she was introduced to drugs through a family member before joining the University. Fortunately, with the support and guidance of reformed students like Alex Chemwile, and the mentorship and counseling provided by Madam Jacqueline Naulikha, she was able to overcome addiction. Her story served as an inspiration to many in attendance.
In her speech, Madam Naulikha encouraged students who may be silently struggling with drug abuse to reach out to trusted individuals for support. She emphasized that recovery is a gradual process that requires patience, guidance, and the right support system.
Professor Mburu also delivered a powerful message, urging students not to stigmatize those affected by drug abuse but instead to stand by them and offer help. He shared a personal story about his own son’s struggle with addiction and how, through guidance and support, his son successfully reformed. Professor Mburu further pledged the University’s support to the Nursing Department for this important initiative and called upon students to play an active role in spreading awareness.
The Nursing Department reaffirmed its commitment to continue spearheading the fight against drug abuse, promising to involve the entire university fraternity in future campaigns and initiatives.
